Hi again everyone,

Jo here again. Thank you for all your replies. It was really interesting reading about your rooms. So most walls inside houses in China are white? White isn't a very popular colour for a room like a bedroom or a living room in the UK, but it is quite a popular colour for a bathroom.

It's interesting to learn about the differences and how we perceive 观察 different colours in different countries - in some places a colour might be lucky and in other countries it might not.

It is actually very difficult deciding on the colour of a room. If you go to a big DIY store here there are hundreds of colours to chose from and it does take some time to decide.

It was very interesting what you said about a yellow room and insects. The room on the picture I posted was yellow, but I was actually about to paint it blue. So we didn't really like the yellow much either!

I am very pleased that my blog actually inspired 鼓励 some of you to paint and do DIY!

And everyone who replied about the expression 'to paint the town red' pretty much got it right. We usually say this to mean you go out in the evening, enjoy yourself and usually drink alcohol and even go dancing. But I guess having a wild and crazy time is almost the same thing!

What's your favourite colour?

Actually talking of colours as we were, I thought today we might look at some adjectives 形容词 that we put in front of colours, to describe what shade 色度 of that particular colour you are talking about.

We might use the word 'pale' 淡的 or 'light' 颜色浅的. It was pale blue or light green.

The opposite of that is 'dark' 黑暗的 - dark red, dark brown.

We might use the adjective 'bright' 鲜艳的 - the Chinese flag is bright red in colour. A bright colour is a very happy kind of colour, very strong.

Another good one is 'deep' 深的,浓厚的 - there were no clouds in the sky, it was a very deep blue. We use this one to mean a colour is very strong and dark.

Hope you find these helpful words to use when you are describing the colour of things in great detail.

Anyway, I thought, seeing as you were so good at the last one, that I would give you another idiom 成语,习语 or expression to guess the meaning of. Again on a painting theme, how about this one?

If we describe something like "watching paint dry" - what do we mean? So for example - I think playing golf is like watching paint dry. How am I trying to describe it?

I look forward to reading your answers.

Hope you're enjoying your May holiday.

Jo
